There are many reasons as to why individuals seek career counselling, many include: lack of enjoyment in their present career, not meeting personal goals or expectations, and in transition either by choice or by conditions which they have little control over.

The goal of career or vocational counselling is to help clients reach their personal career goals. Typically, a therapist will use a variety of skills and techniques to help clients make informed decisions about potential career choices. Choices are best made once an individual has a better understanding of their own capacity (both physical and mental), available career options, and motivational or self-limiting behaviours.

One of the benefits of career counselling is identifying the strengths of an individual and how each can be utilized appropriately. Our goal is to help our clients clarify expectations and take action to alleviate anxieties, fill in missing information, and address indecisiveness.

Effective career counselling will help clients:
  • Find their career related passion.
  • Develop a plan to help use their unique talents, interests, values, and life experiences to achieve their goals.
  • Challenge disempowering beliefs and barriers that may be limiting learning or progression.
  • Make decisions based on values, needs and inner beliefs.
  • Develop strategies to implement healthy work/life balance.
  • Develop healthier coping strategies for managing potential stressors or conflict situations.
  • Approach the future with enthusiasm and optimism.

Loss and grief are a normal and integral part of life. Each person needs to move through the grief cycle and do so in a healthy manner.

There are many types of loss that we may experience, including: breaking up with a loved one, moving far away, divorce of parents, losing a friendship, questioning spiritual beliefs, challenging an illness, death of friend/family member, or developing a disability. Grief is often accompanied by feelings of pain and suffering. Our goal in our program is to help our clients move through the experience and heal and resolve from the loss. This includes helping individuals manage with reaction, adaptation, and process.

Typically, the bereaved person will move through a challenge in identity. The person will naturally have to distance themselves from the attachment they had to the event/person and recognize that the situation has changed by moving towards acceptance. At times the situation can be viewed as positive, as it often facilitates personal growth, but initially it can be difficult and the person may describe feeling a sense of loneliness and helplessness.

We all experience difficulties adjusting to change from time to time. Some of us experience more difficulties than others. Our program well help individuals develop the appropriate coping strategies to help our clients challenge or effectively deal with obstacle(s) in their life.

Our goal is to empower our clients with the necessary skills and resources to challenge habits, attitudes, emotional responses, and behavioural patterns that play a part in adjusting appropriately.

What we know from psychological research focused on adjustment is that those who are willing to conform, adapt and possibly accept will likely find it easier to accept change. Our therapy program helps individuals recognize that change is an opportunity for growth that requires constant conscious evaluation and habitual behaviour modification. Ineffective habits should be examined and possibly discarded for the facilitation of new or more effective established behaviours.

Our goal at Counselling Services for York Region is to see that you succeed in reaching your therapeutic goals. If you have any questions about our counselling program specific to adjustment issues, please feel free to contact us (416-999-3437 or This email address is being protected from spambots.
