VAUGHAN, Ontario - Religion and spirituality may be an important part of your life. Many individuals ask if they should be choosing a therapist based on their subscribed religious/spiritual beliefs. Without a doubt, you should choose a therapist who respects and understand your beliefs, however it’s not necessary that the therapist share those beliefs in order to develop a working relationship with you.
Please note that there is a difference between religious based counselling and therapy based counselling. In religious-based counselling, your counsellor will provide counselling based on faith-based expertise. They may draw on religious texts and teachings to help you reflect on your issues and concerns. Prayer is usually an important part of faith-based-counselling.
A trained counselling therapist will receive training in working with individuals of different religious/spiritual beliefs. This is an important element of our training. We are taught to adjust our theories and techniques accordingly. Our goal is to create an environment that is positive, welcoming, non-judgmental, and non-discriminatory. Although we don’t provide faith-based counselling, we can help you by providing research supported therapeutic care.
For more information please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to explain how we can help.
